a city doomed
By: Radhika Shah
*in the city of eternal dusk, the skyline twists and turns, reflecting streets upon streets of molten dreams- the skyscrapers, those castles in the distance; oh so effortlessly they pierce the clouds; our flickering lights’ perpetual battle: drowning out the oncoming night- see me, see me, the pleas reverberating across the soulless waters, their reflections sinking, sinking without a trace- the peculiar scents of the frenzied beauty in this fleeting place, wilting roses and dashed hopes; the cry of the almost, of what could have been, if only- the vanity of a few, one old woman’s curse; isn’t it funny, how quickly the tables turn? glimmering jewels reflected in her fiery eyes, a false accusation; her tears, firestorms; a city engulfed- crumbling brick memories if only they had known- if only, now, the stars weren’t crashing, walls closing in on half-hearted desperation and partially doused flames; if only they’d listened, the deafening silence before the fall unseen; if only time wasn’t a one-way road; even the fires couldn’t take back thoughtless words; trampled dandelion wishes too frail to carry the weight of the holes in a once transcendent tapestry of living- a cautionary warning- but dead stars can tell no tales the inferno dies, darkness falls; it lingers, for all eternity
*kannagi is a legendary figure from the tamil epic silappatikaram, who, after her husband kovalan is wrongfully executed for theft, seeks justice by revealing the truth, and burns down the city of madurai for its injustice. in this poem, the city doomed is madurai from this epic.
